Dee leads the way at MIMA

Dee shows off  her art on a stall at MIMA on sunday .
We wandered in and found  Dee and friend Sylvia behind a beautiful selection of works and we were so impressed! The range and quality of their little stall was brilliant. Setting the standard for the rest of the group....     julia

AGM and forthcoming events

Our AGM was held this Tuesday (5th Nov) and resulted in the re-election of the current committee, albeit with slightly changed roles. Julia remains as chair, and Gill Place as Minutes Sec. Les will now be secretary for Membership as well as Funding, while Rob will be Treasurer as well as IT Manager. Eve will continue on the committee as Deputy treasurer, and many thanks once again to Eve for sticking to the job of Treasurer for so long.

As a group we continue to prosper and are in quite a healthy financial position, despite our last funding bid being turned down. It would be good to recruit some new members, however, and we now have some publicity postcards that we can distribute to people or place in strategic locations.

After a rather quiet period we now have quite a number of events on the horizon, starting with a tour round MIMA on November 21st. A visit to Newcastle Galleries, including the Laura Knight exhibition at the Laing, has been proposed for before Christmas with the possibility of a further visit to see the Lakeland Artists exhibition at the Rheged Centre, Penrith, in January or February. Geoff Hewitt will be doing us another workshop (on drawing and painting figures) in January, and there is a possibility of a workshop with Helen Gorrill  (visit www.helengorrill.com) in late February or March. looking further ahead we are planning an intensive painting week at The Barn in March and, as I understand it, Carol is booking us an exhibition slot at Stockton Library, wherewe can show our work on 'Flight'

Here the results from Tuesdays life model session. I'm sorry for not making a note of whose picture is which. Now looking forward to the next session with Caroline on November 12th.

I've also booked Geoff Hewitt for another workshop in January - he suggested drawing and painting  (clothed) figures. What do people think?

Gill's Pictures

I keep badgering people to send me images to put on the website, so it's nice to see a couple of new ones from Gill Place. Thanks for sending them Gill, I love the colours in these, especially the still life.

Discover Middlesbrough Festival

I don't know how many people are aware of the 'Discover Middlesbrough Festival', which takes place in the last couple of weeks of October. It includes quite a lot of art related events including  new William Tillier exhibitions at MIMA and the Platform A Gallery, together with a talk on Fri 25th. The Dorman Museum is having a 'Pencil and Paper' Exhibition running until Jan 26th. Dundas House hosts the Navigator North Spen Studios on Saturday 19th and there are more open studios and exhibitions at Gilkes Street Artists and Platform Arts on Sat 26th.

Booklets about the festival are available at the Town hall and libraries or you can download one from http://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/static/ebooks/Dm/

Runswick Bay

In September the group hired the Fisherman's Institute at Runswick Bay for two intensive painting days, which proved to be enjoyable and productive for those who attended, especially as the weather was beautiful.. Hopoefully, more information and pictures will follow.

Winfield

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Winfield Stewart. Gently humorous, unflappable, practical and unfailingly supportive, Winfield has been with us from the beginning and will be sorely missed by all of us.

Winfield was willing to have a go at anything, but, most of all, became an accomplished water colourist. His atmospheric seascapes and lively, immediate figurative paintings are particularly memorable. Here are two to remind us of his talent:

Website Update Not (again)

As I'm away for a while, I won't be able to keep the website up-to-date. However, we can still add posts to the blog.

Last week I visited the Coast Gallery at Cloughton just before you reach Scarborough. They had a really nice exhibition of John Egerton pots, some interesting felt pebbles by an artist whose name escapes me, plus paintings by a range of artists including P.Hicks. They don't appear to have a website but you can find them at www.Facebook.com/CoastGallery

Runswick Bay

Another lovely day  thanks to Kate. The weather was not too bad  and I did manage quite a few sketches. I will really need to focus when we have our two days in September.
Spirit of Place Exhibition at Preston Park should be in place the week beginning July 8th.
Thanks again Kate for your hospitality.

Runswick Bay Painting Day News

Another enjoyable day and the rain held off - what a nice place to paint, but how complex! Thank you, Kate, for your hospitality.

Runswick Bay Painting Day

On Tuesday July 2nd we are scheduled to have a painting day in Runswick Bay, courtesy of Kate. The plan is to meet at Kate's cottage between 10 am and 10.30am, before going off for a morning's painting. Please bring food to share for lunch. If you're not sure where to go, you'll certainly meet someone in the car park if you get there reasonably early. Failing that, it's not a big place - Head for the beach and wave!

Edinburgh Exhibitions

I've just come back from the Samuel Peploe Exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I bought the book if you want a look. If you want to see the exhibition it finishes on June 23rd, so you'll have to be quick.

However, the Royal Scottish Academy Summer Exhibition is also well worth a look, and, unlike its London counterpart, is free to enter. I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well - there was something for everybody. here's a link:

Greetings from Tasmania

Hi Guys,

I was going to send a picture I'd done over here, but haven't actually done any. However, have just had an interesting afternoon at Hobart Art Gallery , so here's a nice example of minimalist 20th century Australian art. I thought of putting it on upside down but that would have been too corny even for me.

Website Update - Not

As most of you know, I'm away for a month and haven't had time to update the website.

It looks like we have some good things coming up, with a planned 2 day workshop at Runswick Bay, the opportunity for a week's intensive painting at The Barn for those who can stand the pace, and maybe some more visits. Dates and times have yet to be confirmed.

See you all when I get back!

My first blog!

Wow I am now a blogger! thanks Rob your instructions are very clear - as you can see.
Our first life drawing session today at the Barn went very well and was well supported. Caroline is an excellent model and the two and a half hour session flew by. I really enjoyed getting back to drawing.

Geoff Hewitt Portrait Workshop

Once again an excellent session from Geoff, who gave us a clear and  intro to portraiture before guiding our individual efforts. It was also good to be joined for the first time by members of the Lakeside group. Another first - I actually managed to produce something that looked like the person I was drawing. Here are some of the results:

Drama from Dee

Kate - Guess who?

Subtlety from Julia

Jan - Quizical

Kath - Not a self portrait

Les - Why me?

Northumbria University Gallery

3 painters are being exhibited until March 28th: Dale Atkinson, Albert Irvin, Norman Cornish in Paris. I wasn't so keen on Albert Irvin's abstract gouache work, but found Dale Atkinson interesting and disturbing, and Norman Cornish's Paris sketches full of immediacy and charm. Well worth a look if you get the chance.

Your Paintings Website

You might like to check out Your Paintings on the BBC website. They're attempting to catalogue all the nation's paintings for you to view. You can also make your own collection of favourites. It looks a really fantastic site. For example, I searched for Paul Nash and found 86 downloadable paintings of which this is an example:
